Thanks for the instructions. Not a moot point at all. Avast's scheduler is incomplete for two reasons in my case:

1. The screensaver scan isn't good because scanning many times a day is too much wear and tear on the hard drive. It's also incompatible with good energy practices. I like to let the computer sleep whenever I'm away for 30 minutes. With the task scheduler I have the option to wake the computer for the quick scan when it’s idle for 3 hours – and I’m sure to be asleep.

2. I haven't done a monthly scheduled scan for years because it inevitably interrupts me in the middle of my work. I just don't have a regular schedule. The task scheduler allows you to force the task to wait until the computer is idle for any amount of time, and will also keep trying to run the scan until it is allowed to complete it, rather than cancelling it like Avast does.
Last, task scheduler can stop the quick scan if it’s already running when the monthly scan starts.

Avast could simply add an option for advanced users to use the task scheduler and it would save them the headache of trying to imitate Windows capabilities in order to accommodate us. Hope they see this! I love Avast. ;-)

Thanks again!

I have tried 3 other free antivirus programs, andt this is the only one that has worked flawlessly and efficiently without causing my system to run slower than a mud turtle with a double hernia. Thanks, Emma, אנטי וירוס

This is not moot, since Avast Free 5 only permits scheduling a full scan once per day, and some techs don't know when a client will be using their PC. Ashquick enables several quick scans to be scheduled during a given day.

Very helpful walk-through, thanks!

Chris: when I set this up, I tested it to run 2 minutes into the future. This allowed me to verify that it worked. Then I set it for the time actually wanted it to keep. When it works, you should see a window pop up with "Quick Scan" or something in the title. If you don't see that window, something is wrong.
